The group of local Inner Sunset residents and businesses began organizing Inner Sunset street events in 2010 and continued in 2011. In 2012, the organizing team made some important changes:
A new name: The name “Inner Sunset Street Fair” was changed to “Inner Sunset Sundays” to differentiate the events from the typical street fair. Our events are organized by the community and are participation-oriented, whereas most street fairs are commerce-focused and produced by outsiders.
More events: The team decided to put on four events during the year (September 9th, October 14th, November 11th, and December 9th), instead of just one. This allowed more opportunities to enjoy the events, backups in the event of bad weather, and the chance improve the events without waiting a whole year.
More emphasis on interaction: The team wanted to provide plenty of chances for people to interact with one another, instead of just observing, buying something, and leaving.
A smaller footprint: The event area was shrunk from the 2 1/2 blocks of 2010 to just one block of Irving between 9th and 10th Avenues. This made the events feel more welcoming and less overwhelming.
A plaza philosophy: The event space was treated as a plaza – what would people enjoy doing there and what would encourage them to stick around?
